What It Is
Lugdunum Musée et Théâtres is an archaeological museum and site dedicated to the Gallo-Roman history of Lyon. Built into the hillside of Fourvière, the building houses ancient artifacts, including mosaics, statues, inscriptions, and everyday items from Roman Gaul, alongside direct access to the Roman theater ruins.
Getting There
From central Lyon, take the funicular railway from the Vieux-Lyon metro station to the Fourvière or Minimes stop. The ride takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the city center. Walking uphill from Old Lyon takes about 20 to 30 minutes on foot.
Time to Spend
Allow about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to tour the indoor exhibition galleries and walk through the adjacent outdoor ruins.
When to Go
Weekday mornings are generally the least crowded. The outdoor theater grounds have little shade, so visit early in the day during summer to avoid peak midday temperatures. The site sees higher visitor numbers on weekends.
