What It Is

The Basilica of Our Lady is a Romanesque Catholic church in Maastricht's old town, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Often referred to as "Star of the Sea," the building features heavy medieval stonework and an austere interior. Visitors come to see the historic Romanesque architecture, the religious relics, and the small devotional chapel housing the Marian statue.

Getting There

The church stands in the historic center and is reached easily on foot. It is roughly a 5- to 10-minute walk from other central areas, including the Markt and the Vrijthof.

Time to Allow

Plan for 30 to 45 minutes to view the main nave, choir, and side chapel.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings are the calmest time to visit. The church and surrounding area become noticeably busier on weekend afternoons. Sightseeing should be avoided during scheduled worship services.
