About Fluweelengrot

Fluweelengrot is a network of sandstone tunnels in Valkenburg near Maastricht, hand-quarried since the 12th century. Visitors walk through the underground labyrinth to see historical wall art, charcoal inscriptions, and escape passages once used by castle occupants.

Getting There

Direct trains run from Maastricht Station to Valkenburg in about 10 to 15 minutes. From Valkenburg Station, it is a 10-minute walk through town to the site entrance at the foot of the hill.

Time to Allow

Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours. Standard guided tours last roughly 50 to 60 minutes.

When to Visit

Subterranean temperatures remain cool year-round, so warm clothing is recommended. Weekends and school holidays are the busiest periods. Weekday mornings offer a quieter experience, while winter holiday events bring heavy foot traffic.

Combine a visit with nearby sights on foot:

  • Valkenburg Castle (0.1km): Castle ruins located right above the tunnels.
  • Dutch Hills (0.2km): Rolling landscape with walking paths.
