Overview

Valkenburg Castle consists of the ruins of the only hilltop fortress in the Netherlands. Situated above the town, the site preserves medieval stone walls, tower remains, and defensive structures. Travellers visit to explore the historic layout and look out over the surrounding valley.

Getting There

From central Maastricht, regional trains run to Valkenburg Station in about 10 to 15 minutes. The entrance is a 10-minute walk from the station. By car or taxi, the drive from Maastricht takes around 15 minutes.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours to navigate the grounds and examine the surviving masonry.

When to Visit

Because the site is exposed and has uneven stone stairs, dry weather is preferable. The site gets crowded on summer weekends and public holidays; weekday mornings offer a quieter visit.
