Overview

The Henares is a river in central Spain that rises near Sigüenza in Guadalajara and flows westward to join the Jarama River east of Madrid. Visitors come to walk, run, or cycle along its riparian trails and view the rural landscape of the Spanish interior outside the metropolitan core.

Getting There

From central Madrid, commuter trains (Cercanías lines C-2 and C-7) run eastward to stations near the river, such as Alcalá de Henares. The journey from Atocha Station takes approximately 35 to 45 minutes.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend between 1.5 and 3 hours on-site, which allows sufficient time for a relaxed riverside walk or a short cycling route.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn provide the most moderate weather for outdoor recreation. Midday in summer can be hot with sparse shade along open sections of the path, so early mornings and late afternoons are preferable during warmer months. Crowds are generally light on weekdays and moderate on weekends with local residents.
