About the Museum

The Prado is Spain's national art museum, built around paintings and sculpture the Spanish royal family gathered from the 15th century onward. The collection runs to more than 5,000 paintings, with particular depth in Spanish, Italian, and Flemish masters. Travellers come for the sheer scale and quality of the holdings rather than any single headline piece, though works by Velázquez, Goya, and Bosch draw the largest crowds.

Getting There

The museum sits in central Madrid, an easy walk from Puerta del Sol or Retiro Park — figure 15 to 20 minutes on foot from most points in the historic centre. Metro Banco de España (line 2) or Atocha (lines 1 and Cercanías trains) are both within a short walk. From Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), a taxi or the airport metro line connecting to line 2 takes roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic and terminal.

Time to Allow

Given the size of the collection, plan on at least two to three hours for a focused visit. Art lovers wanting to see the major galleries in depth should allow half a day.

When to Go

The museum draws heavy crowds, especially around midday and on weekends. Arriving soon after opening tends to mean thinner galleries and shorter queues. Weekday visits are generally calmer than weekends.
