Masaya Volcano rises near Lake Nicaragua as a gently sloping shield volcano still active today. Visitors keep coming for the chance to see its crater, which occasionally emits ash, up close.

An old fortress atop a hill just north of Masaya, standing within the Masaya Caldera facing the volcano. The climb rewards visitors with sweeping views over the city and surrounding landscape.
