Located near Lake Nicaragua, this is an active shield volcano. Travelers visit the site to observe the crater and the lava lake, which occasionally emits ash and volcanic gases.

Getting There

The volcano is accessible from the center of Masaya via taxi or local transport. The drive typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions. For those arriving from Managua, the nearest airport is Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA).

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours to explore the area. This provides enough time to drive up the access roads and spend time at the various lookout points around the crater rim.

When to Visit

Visiting in the late afternoon or evening is common, as the glow of the lava is more visible after dark. The site can get crowded during weekends and public holidays. Visitors should be aware that wind direction can affect the smell of sulfur near the crater.
