• Walking: Best within Batse’s historic alleys and central Taulud. Distances are short, but severe midday heat limits daytime foot travel.
• Minibuses and shared taxis: The standard choice for crossing causeways between mainland Edaga, Taulud, and the port. They leave when full.
• Private taxis: Needed for trips to outlying areas like Gurgusum Beach or for travel after dark, when shared vans stop running.
• Railway: The mountain line to Asmara operates as an occasional heritage service rather than regular commuter transport.

Massawa is served via Asmara International Airport, roughly 115 kilometers inland. Traveling between them requires descending the mountain escarpment:

• Intercity bus: Lowest cost band, high effort. Involves a local taxi to Asmara's bus terminal, then a shared bus taking three to four hours.
