How to plan your first visit to Massawa, Eritrea

Understanding the City Layout
Massawa consists of a mainland hub and two offshore islands connected by stone causeways.
- Batse (Massawa Island): The historic port core, characterized by coral-block houses, covered arcades, Ottoman-era streets, and docks.
- Taulud Island: Sits between the mainland and Batse, holding administrative offices, historical monuments, and war memorials.
- The Mainland: Contains residential quarters, the intercity bus depot, and access roads north to Gurgusum Beach.
Arriving and Getting Around
Travelers enter via Asmara International Airport (ASM). Foreign visitors must secure an official travel permit in Asmara before heading to the coast. Road travel descends the dramatic highland escarpment via shared bus, minibus, or private car. The famous narrow-gauge railway between Asmara and Massawa runs on dedicated chartered runs rather than daily commuter schedules.
On the islands, walking is the primary way to get around. Shared minibuses and yellow taxis connect the mainland bus terminal with Taulud and Batse across the causeways.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the travel permit: You cannot travel from Asmara without an approved permit; checkpoints will turn you back.
- Underestimating the heat: Coastal humidity and heat peak sharply at midday. Rest during early afternoon and tour outside these hours.
- Relying on cards: Cash is strictly required everywhere. International cards and ATMs do not operate.
Sensible Shape for a First Trip
Start early on Batse Island to explore its historic architecture before temperatures rise. Use late afternoons for the monuments and causeway views on Taulud. Keep mainland beaches or coastal boat excursions for later days.
