Monument to Cuauhtémoc

Overview

The Monument to Cuauhtémoc was erected in 1887 to honor the last Aztec ruler. Located where Avenida de los Insurgentes meets Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, this 19th-century landmark features bronze reliefs and indigenous motifs. Travelers visit to view civic artwork dedicated to Mexico's pre-Hispanic history and the defense of Tenochtitlan.

Getting There

From the city centre, travel west along Paseo de la Reforma. The journey takes approximately 15 to 25 minutes by public transit or taxi, or around 35 minutes on foot.

Time to Spend

Plan for 15 to 30 minutes. Since the structure stands inside a major traffic circle, a brief stop provides enough time to observe the bronze statue, base reliefs, and inscriptions.

When to Visit

Daylight hours offer the best visibility for examining the details. The intersection is a busy transit point that gets noisy and crowded with vehicular traffic during weekday rush hours. Sunday mornings are typically quieter, when Paseo de la Reforma is closed to motor vehicles for pedestrians and cyclists.

Nearby Combinations

  • Angel of Independence (1km)
  • Museo Nacional de San Carlos (1.1km)
  • Alameda Central Park (1.7km)
  • Torre Mayor (1.9km)
