Brera Astronomical Observatory
What it is
The Brera Astronomical Observatory sits on the upper floor of the same palazzo that houses the Pinacoteca di Brera. It's a working observatory founded in the 18th century and still used for research by INAF and the University of Milan, with historic telescopes, instruments and domes that give a sense of how astronomy was practised in Milan long before light pollution made the city sky unusable for serious observation. It suits visitors interested in the history of science rather than anyone expecting a modern planetarium experience.
Getting there
It's in the Brera district, a short walk from the Duomo area — roughly 15-20 minutes on foot from the city centre, or a couple of stops on the metro to Montenapoleone or Lanza followed by a walk. Brera's streets are pedestrian-friendly, so walking is usually the easiest option once you're near the centre.
Time to allow
Because access is often limited to specific guided visits or occasional public openings rather than free wandering, plan for around an hour if you're able to join a visit, including time to see the instrument rooms and domes.
When to go
Given its research function, visits are typically scheduled rather than walk-in, so check in advance what's available on the day you plan to go rather than arriving unannounced. It isn't a high-traffic tourist stop, so crowding isn't a major concern.
