Transport Modes in Mindelo
Mindelo is a compact city where most central attractions, including the port and main squares, are accessible on foot. For longer distances, two main motorized options exist:
- Taxis: These are the most convenient for direct trips. They win when you have luggage or are traveling in a small group to specific sightseeing spots outside the center.
- Alugueres (Collective Taxis): These shared vehicles operate on semi-fixed routes. They are the most economical choice for locals and budget travelers moving between neighborhoods.
Tickets and Passes
There are no integrated transit passes or tourist cards for city transport in Mindelo. Payments are made in cash per trip. This system suits spontaneous travelers but may be inconvenient for those preferring digital payments or pre-paid bundles.
From Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) to City Center
The airport is located a short distance from the urban core. Travelers typically choose between:
- Private Taxi: Lowest effort and fastest time. This is the standard choice for those with heavy luggage. Cost band: Medium.
- Shared Transport: Higher effort as it may involve waiting for other passengers or a stop-and-go journey. Cost band: Low.
Practical Travel Notes
- Rush Hours: Traffic increases around the port area and main arteries during morning and evening commutes, though congestion is generally mild compared to major capitals.
- Luggage: Taxis are the only reliable option for large suitcases. Alugueres have limited space and are not suitable for bulky luggage.
- Accessibility: Pavements in the city center can be uneven, which may pose challenges for those with limited mobility or strollers.
- Last Services: While taxis operate throughout the night, collective transport frequency drops significantly after dark.
