Transport Modes

Route taxis: Identified by red license plates, these run along set routes between downtown and outer districts. They pick up multiple riders and are the cheapest option, but require knowing local drop points.

Chartered taxis: Red-plate taxis or JUTA operators can be hired for private trips. Agree on the fare beforehand, as standard meters are not used.

Rental cars: Driving is on the left. Ideal for regional coast trips, but downtown traffic and tight parking make them inefficient for quick city hops.

Passes and Fares

Montego Bay has no transit passes, smartcards, or multi-ride tickets. All local transport is pay-per-ride in cash. Paying route taxis in Jamaican dollars prevents poor exchange rates. Pre-paid options exist solely through private transfer services.

Sangster Airport (MBJ) to City Options

  • Authorized airport taxis: Booked at indoor arrivals desks. Low effort, fast dispatch, mid-to-high cost band.
  • Pre-arranged transfers: Driver meets you outside customs. Minimal effort, direct ride, higher cost band.
  • Route taxis: Not allowed at curbside. Requires walking luggage to the main roadway. High effort, lowest cost band, suitable only in daylight with light bags.

Practical Notes

  • Rush hours: Traffic peaks around downtown gridlocks and Barnett Street during morning and late afternoon commute hours.
  • Night travel: Route taxis become scarce after dark. Book private taxis in advance for nighttime travel.
  • Luggage and accessibility: Shared sedans offer minimal trunk space and lack wheelchair access. Travelers with mobility devices or excess luggage should pre-book private vans.
