Estévez Palace

The Estévez Palace is a historic building located on Plaza Independencia in Montevideo. Formerly the seat of the Uruguayan government, it now functions as a ceremonial venue for state events. Visitors primarily visit to view its elegant facade and architectural detail, as it represents a significant piece of the city's political and civic history.

Getting There

The palace is located directly within the city centre. If you are staying in the downtown area, it is accessible via a short walk. From the main commercial districts of the centre, it typically takes 5 to 15 minutes to reach on foot.

Time Requirement

Since the primary interest for most travellers is the exterior architecture and its position within the square, allow 20 to 30 minutes for a visit. If a state event allows for interior access, this time may increase.

When to Visit

The building can be viewed at any time of day. Daylight hours are recommended to see the architectural details of the facade. The plaza can become crowded during public holidays or official state ceremonies.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, this site is easily combined with other landmarks in the immediate vicinity:

  • Artigas Mausoleum (0.1km): The resting place of the national hero.
  • Palacio Salvo (0.1km): An iconic early 20th-century building.
