Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House is a historic site in Valletta consisting of the ruins of a 19th-century theater. Originally opened in 1866 and designed by a British architect, the building was destroyed by bombing during World War II. Today, it serves as an open-air site where visitors can view the remaining structural foundations and walls, reflecting the city's wartime history.

Getting There

The site is located within the fortified city of Valletta. Since it is centrally positioned, it is accessible by foot from most points in the city center. Depending on your starting point within the walls, it typically takes 5 to 15 minutes to reach on foot.

Duration of Visit

Because the attraction consists of ruins rather than a full interior museum, most visitors spend between 30 and 60 minutes exploring the grounds and viewing the architecture.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors, so it is best visited during the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, particularly during the summer months. It can get crowded during peak tourist seasons when cruise ships are docked in the harbor.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its central location, this site can be easily combined with other nearby landmarks within a 0.1km radius:

  • Our Lady of Victory Church (0.1km)
  • Church of St Catherine of Italy (0.1km)
