What It Is

Elephanta Caves is a complex of rock-cut temples on an island in Mumbai Harbour. Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, the site contains sculpted stone relief panels and pillared halls, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Getting There

Ferries depart from South Mumbai at the Gateway of India, taking about one hour to reach the island. From the pier, a flight of stone stairs leads up to the caves.

Time to Spend

Allow 2 to 3 hours on-site to view the main chambers. Including the round-trip boat crossing, the entire outing requires roughly half a day.

When to Visit

November through February brings cooler weather suitable for walking. Monsoons from June to September often disrupt ferry travel due to rough seas. The site gets crowded on weekends; weekday mornings are substantially quieter.
