Elephanta Island

Elephanta Island is a small landmass located off the coast of Mumbai. Travelers visit the island primarily to see the Hindu cave temples carved directly into the rock. These sites feature sculptures of the deity Shiva and various scenes from the Ramayana, providing a record of ancient Indian rock-cut architecture and art.

Getting There

The island is accessible only by boat. Ferries depart from the Gateway of India in the city centre. The boat travel time varies depending on the vessel used, but generally takes about one hour each way.

Time Allocation

Visitors should allow approximately three to five hours to explore the island and the cave complexes once they arrive.

Planning Your Visit

The island gets crowded, particularly on weekends and public holidays. To avoid the largest crowds, arrive early in the morning. The most comfortable time to visit is during the cooler months from November to February, as the humidity and heat can be intense during the summer.

Nearby Points of Interest

While on the island, the primary site is the Elephanta Caves (0.3km). For those returning to the mainland and exploring the surrounding region, other points of interest include:

  • Mumbai Trans Harbour Link: 4.1km
  • Mazagaon: 8.9km
  • Parel: 10.3km
