Mandapeshwar Caves

Located in Borivali on the outskirts of Mumbai, this site is an 8th-century cave temple dedicated to the god Shiva. Visitors go here to see the rock-cut architecture and the remnants of the site's earlier history, which include traces of its earlier use as a Buddhist monastery.

Getting There

To reach the caves from the city centre, travelers typically use a combination of the suburban railway (Western Line) to Borivali station and a local auto-rickshaw for the final leg of the journey. Depending on traffic and the starting point in the city, the trip generally takes between 1 to 2 hours.

Most visitors spend approximately 1 to 2 hours exploring the temple complex and the surrounding area.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements, so visiting during the cooler months from November to February is advisable. Early morning or late afternoon is preferred to avoid the midday heat. The area can become crowded during local festivals or on weekends.
