Kanheri Caves

Located within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, this site is the largest Buddhist monastery in western India. It consists of 109 caves carved into the basalt rock between the 2nd and 8th centuries. Visitors go here to see the ancient stupas, Buddha statues, and rock-cut sculptures that served as a center for Buddhist learning and residence.

Getting There

The caves are situated in the northern part of Mumbai. From the city centre, travelers typically take a taxi or ride-sharing service to the entrance of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. From the park gate, internal transport is required to reach the caves. The total travel time varies depending on traffic but generally takes between 1 to 2 hours.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 3 to 5 hours to explore the main cave complexes and walk the connecting trails. The site is spread across a hilly area, requiring a fair amount of walking.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the cooler months from November to February. Early morning arrivals are recommended to avoid the midday heat and larger crowds. The site can get crowded on weekends and public holidays.
