Powai Lake

Overview

Powai Lake is an artificial body of water located in Mumbai's Powai area, bordered on its eastern side by the IIT Bombay campus. Travellers visit primarily for a leisurely walk along the shoreline promenade, birdwatching, and a quiet outdoor break from the city's denser urban districts.

Getting There

The lake is located roughly 25 to 30 kilometers north of South Mumbai. A taxi or rideshare from the city centre takes between 60 and 90 minutes depending on traffic. You can also take a suburban train to Kanjurmarg station and complete the final leg by auto-rickshaw.

Time to Spend

Allow roughly 1 to 2 hours to walk along the paved promenade and view the water.

When to Go

Visit during early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat. The cooler winter months between November and February provide the most comfortable weather for walking. The promenade gets crowded with local residents on weekend evenings, so weekday mornings are ideal if you prefer fewer people.

Nearby Attractions

You can pair a visit with several nearby destinations:

  • Mahakali Caves (3.8km): Ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves.
  • Seven Islands of Bombay (5.3km): Historic sites across central Mumbai.
  • Jogeshwari Caves (5.6km): Rock-cut cave temples.
  • Tulsi Lake (6.7km): Another freshwater lake situated further north.
