Mahakali Caves

The Mahakali Caves are a collection of 19 rock-cut temples carved into the hillside between the 4th century BCE and the 6th century. Visitors go here to see ancient Buddhist architecture and weathered rock carvings that provide a historical record of early religious practices in the region.

Getting There

The site is located in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. From the city centre, the most common way to reach the caves is by taxi or ride-sharing service. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey typically takes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the cave complex and examine the remaining carvings.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements. It is best to visit during the cooler months from November to February to avoid extreme heat and humidity. Early morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday sun. The area does not typically experience the same level of crowding as major city landmarks, though it can be busier on weekends.
