Uhuru Gardens

Located in the Langata area of Nairobi, this is an urban memorial park. It is the historic site where the Kenyan national flag was first raised in December 1963 to mark the country's independence. Visitors go here to see the memorial markers and walk through the grounds to learn about the nation's transition to self-rule.

Getting There

The park is accessible from Nairobi's city centre via taxi or ride-sharing services. Depending on the traffic conditions, which can be heavy in this part of the city, the journey typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1.5 to 3 hours to walk the perimeter of the park and visit the various monuments and memorial sites located throughout the grounds.

When to Visit

Morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The park can become crowded during national holidays and weekends, as it is a popular site for local gatherings and official commemorations.

Nearby Attractions

The park can be combined with other sites in the vicinity. Depending on your itinerary, you may consider visiting:

  • Britam Tower (3.2km)
  • Bomas of Kenya (3.5km)
  • The Pinnacle (3.8km)
  • Nairobi Railway Museum (4.4km)
