Citadel of Namur

Overview

The Citadel of Namur is a historic fortress situated at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. Dating back to Roman times and rebuilt across various eras, the complex was a strategic defensive stronghold. Visitors go to explore the extensive stone fortifications and to see the panoramic views where the two rivers meet.

Getting There

From central Namur, you can walk up via pedestrian pathways and steps in 15 to 25 minutes. Road access and a cable car from the riverfront also lead directly to the upper grounds.

Time to Spend

Plan for 2 to 3 hours to walk the grounds and viewpoints. Exploring the underground galleries or museum displays will extend a visit to half a day.

When to Visit

Clear weather is best to take advantage of the outdoor viewpoints across the valley. The open hilltop is exposed to wind and rain. Summer weekends see the most visitors, while weekdays offer a less crowded experience.

Nearby Attractions

You can easily combine a visit with sites at the base of the hill:

  • Grognon (0.2km): The historic point where the rivers converge.
  • Musée Archéologique de Namur (0.3km): Regional archaeological exhibits.
  • Musée provincial Félicien Rops (0.3km): Museum dedicated to the Namur-born artist.
  • Tour Marie Spilar (0.4km): A medieval defensive tower.
