About the Waterfront

The Hudson River flows south through eastern New York into the Atlantic Ocean. Having played a central role in New York's commercial development, its shoreline today offers long stretches of paved parkland and public piers. Travellers visit to walk, cycle, jog, or sit along the water away from city street traffic.

Getting There

From central Manhattan, head west on foot, by bus, or via subway lines serving the west side, such as the 1, 2, 3, A, C, or E trains. The trip takes approximately 15 to 25 minutes.

Time to Allow

Set aside 1 to 2 hours to explore a section of the riverbank, stroll along the promenade, or rest on the piers.

When to Go

Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable weather for walking outdoors. Late afternoon and evening are ideal for watching the sunset over the water toward New Jersey. The pathways become crowded with local runners, cyclists, and families on sunny weekend afternoons; visit during weekday mornings if you prefer a quieter walk.
