Niš Fortress

Located on the right bank of the Nišava River, this site is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Serbia and the Balkans. It overlooks an area with over 2,000 years of continuous habitation. Visitors go here to walk along the defensive walls and explore the historical layout of the fortifications.

Getting There

The fortress is situated within the urban core of Niš. From the city centre, it is accessible via a short walk of approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow roughly 1 to 2 hours to walk the perimeter of the walls and explore the interior grounds.

When to Visit

The site is open-air, making it most accessible during the spring and autumn. During the summer, midday temperatures can be high, so early morning or late afternoon is preferable. The area can become crowded during local festivals and public holidays.
