What Hagushi is
Hagushi bay sits at the mouth of the Hija River in Yomitan, on Okinawa's central-west coast. It's an open stretch of coastline rather than a single fenced-off site, so the appeal is the natural setting itself: river meeting sea, open water views, and a quieter shoreline than the resort beaches further south. On the north side of the river mouth is Toguchi Beach, a public beach that gives access to the water and a place to walk along the shore.
Getting there
Hagushi is in Yomitan, north of central Naha. There's no train service in this part of Okinawa, so the practical options are a rental car or a taxi; a rental car is the more common choice for visiting Yomitan generally, since sights here are spread out along the coast. Expect roughly 40 minutes to an hour by car from central Naha, depending on traffic and the exact route.
How much time to allow
An hour or so covers a walk along Toguchi Beach and a look at the river mouth. If you plan to spend real time in the water or just relax by the shore, allow half a day.
When to go
Morning or late afternoon avoids the strongest midday sun. As with most Okinawan coastal spots, summer weekends bring more visitors, so a weekday or off-season visit will be quieter.
Combining with nearby sights
- Ireibaru Site (4.7km) is the closest inland option if you want to add a historical stop.
- Southeast Botanical Gardens (6.9km) works well as a longer add-on if you're spending most of the day in the area.
- The broader Okinawa Islands and Ryukyu Islands references (both 3.5km) reflect Hagushi's general island setting rather than a specific separate stop.
