About the Site

Christiania Theatre was Norway's first permanent public theatre and served as the de facto national stage during the 19th century. Located at Bankplassen near Akershus Fortress, it played a central role in the history of Norwegian drama. Travellers visit to see the historic grounds where early Norwegian theatrical traditions took root.

Getting There

The site is situated in central Oslo. Walking from Oslo Central Station takes roughly 10 minutes heading toward Bankplassen. Local trams and buses also stop within a short walking distance around Kvadraturen.

Allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes to view the building exterior and walk through the historic square.

When to Visit

The area around Bankplassen can be visited year-round. Daytime is best for viewing the architecture, and the square rarely experiences heavy tourist crowding. Spring and summer provide the most comfortable walking conditions.
