Maridalsvannet

Maridalsvannet is the largest lake in Oslo and serves as the primary source of drinking water for the city. Visitors go here for outdoor activities, specifically walking and hiking along the trails that circle the water. The lake flows into the Akerselva river, which eventually leads to the Oslofjord.

Getting There

From Oslo city centre, you can reach the area using a combination of public transport (T-bane) and walking. Depending on the specific trailhead you choose, the journey typically takes between 30 to 45 minutes.

Time Commitment

Depending on whether you intend to walk the full perimeter or just a section of the trails, allow between 2 to 5 hours. The terrain is natural, so the pace varies by walker.

When to Visit

The lake is accessible year-round. In winter, the trails are used for skiing and snowshoeing, while summer is the primary season for hiking. To avoid the largest crowds, visit on weekdays rather than weekends. Early mornings provide the quietest experience.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a visit to the lake with other nearby natural and academic sites:

  • Marka (2.2km): The forested hilly area surrounding the city.
  • Sognsvann (3km): Another popular lake used for recreation.
  • Alna (4.9km): The Alna river area.
  • Blindern (5.9km): The campus of the University of Oslo.
