Kwakoe Statue

Located in downtown Paramaribo, this statue was created by sculptor Jozef Klas to commemorate the abolition of slavery. It serves as a historical marker within the city, providing a visual point of reflection on Suriname's past for those exploring the urban center on foot.

Getting There

The monument is situated in the heart of the city center. Because it is located within the central district, it is easily accessible by walking from most downtown hotels or main squares. The transit time depends on your starting point within the center, but it is generally a short walk of a few minutes.

Time Requirement

As a public outdoor monument, this is a brief stop. Most visitors spend 10 to 20 minutes observing the sculpture and reading any accompanying information.

When to Visit

The statue is accessible at any time of day. To avoid the midday tropical heat of Paramaribo, early morning or late afternoon visits are more comfortable. It does not typically experience heavy crowds, though the surrounding streets may be busy during business hours.
