Lutheran Church of Paramaribo

Located on Waterkant Street in the old town, this Lutheran church is a designated historic building of historical significance. The current structure was rebuilt in 1834 following a fire that destroyed the previous building in 1832. Visitors go here to observe the colonial architecture and the religious history of the city.

Getting There

The church is situated within the central historic district of Paramaribo. Since it is located in the heart of the city, it is accessible by a short walk from most central hotels and landmarks. Depending on your starting point in the city centre, it typically takes less than 10 to 15 minutes to reach on foot.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to view the exterior and interior of the building.

When to Visit

The church is best visited during the morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak midday heat of Suriname. As it is located in a central area, the surrounding streets can become busy during business hours.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, the church can be easily combined with other nearby sites on foot:

  • Centrale Markt (0.1km): The city's main market.
  • Grote Stadskerk (0.2km): Another prominent historic church.
  • Kwakoe (0.4km): A local cultural point of interest.
