Suriname River

The Suriname River is the primary waterway of the country, originating in the Guiana Highlands and flowing 480 km to the Atlantic Ocean. Travelers visit the river to observe the transition of landscapes, from the Brokopondo Reservoir to the various riverside villages and the urban waterfront of Paramaribo. It serves as a central axis for transportation and local commerce in the region.

Getting There

The river runs directly through the capital city of Paramaribo. Depending on your starting point in the city centre, you can reach the riverbanks within a few minutes by foot or a short taxi ride. For those visiting the upper reaches or the reservoir, boat transport is required.

Duration of Visit

A walk along the Paramaribo waterfront can take one to two hours. However, if you plan to take a boat trip to explore the surrounding villages or the reservoir, allow a full day or more.

When to Visit

The river is accessible year-round. Visitors should be mindful of the rainy season, which can affect water levels and boat travel. Early morning or late afternoon is generally preferred to avoid the midday heat.

  • Commewijne River (10.1km)
