Chele La Pass

Chele La is a mountain pass located between the Paro and Haa valleys in Bhutan. Situated at 3,988 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in the country accessible by road. Travelers visit this location to view the Himalayan mountain range and the surrounding landscape from a high altitude.

Getting There

The pass is reached via winding mountain roads from Paro. Access is primarily by vehicle. Depending on traffic and road conditions, the drive from the Paro area typically takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours one way.

Duration of Visit

Visitors generally spend 1 to 3 hours at the summit. This allows time to adjust to the altitude and observe the views before beginning the descent.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the clear weather windows of spring and autumn for maximum visibility of the peaks. Because of the high elevation, temperatures remain low even in summer. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning to avoid afternoon clouds or fog that can obscure the horizon.

Nearby Attractions

The pass can be combined with other sites in the Paro valley. Nearby locations include:

  • Kyichu Lhakhang (8.4km)
  • Jangtsa Dumtseg Lhakhang (9.8km)
  • Rinpung Dzong (9.8km)
  • National Museum of Bhutan (10.1km)
