The Siq

The Siq is a natural geological fault and narrow gorge that serves as the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra. Travelers walk through this winding canyon to reach the city's interior, observing the high rock walls and the remnants of ancient water channels carved into the stone. The path extends for approximately 1.2 kilometers, ending at the opening that reveals Al-Khazneh.

Access and Timing

The gorge is located within the Petra archaeological site. From the visitor center, it is a short walk to the entrance of the canyon. Once inside, visitors should allow between 30 to 60 minutes to walk through the gorge at a steady pace, depending on how often they stop to observe the rock formations.

Planning Your Visit

Early morning is the most practical time to enter to avoid the highest temperatures and the largest crowds. The area becomes heavily congested as the day progresses. Spring and autumn are the most temperate seasons for visiting this region of Jordan.
