The Ilisos River

The Ilisos is a former river that once flowed through Athens. Today, the majority of its course is buried underground, leaving only fragmented signs of its original path. Travelers visit this site to trace the remnants of the waterway and explore the urban geography of the city's hidden natural history.

Getting There

Accessing the remnants of the river requires navigating various points across the city. From the Athens city centre, most accessible points of the former course can be reached via the Metro or local bus lines. Travel time varies depending on the specific section being visited, but generally takes between 15 to 30 minutes from the central districts.

Duration of Visit

Because the river is not a single contained site but a series of scattered markers and underground sections, the time spent depends on how much of the course you intend to trace. Allow 2 to 3 hours for a focused walk through the primary remaining areas.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the spring or autumn to avoid the extreme heat of the Greek summer. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday traffic and crowds common in the urban areas where the riverbed is located.
