Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens

Overview

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, also known as the Metropolis Cathedral, is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Athens. It functions as the central venue for major state ceremonies, official celebrations, and Orthodox services. Travellers visit to see traditional Greek Orthodox iconography, examine the three-aisled basilica architecture, and observe an active place of worship.

Getting There

Located on Mitropoleos Square, the building is a 5 to 10-minute walk from either Syntagma Square or Monastiraki Square in the city centre. If arriving from the Piraeus port area, metro lines travel directly to central Athens in roughly 20 to 30 minutes, followed by a short walk to the square.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend 20 to 40 minutes inside. This provides enough time to walk the nave, view the iconostasis and religious artwork, and look at the exterior from the square.

When to Visit

Early morning is the quietest time to visit before foot traffic builds up. The square and interior become crowded during midday and on weekend afternoons. Because this is an active church, sightseeing is restricted during scheduled services and Sunday morning liturgies. Modest attire covering shoulders and knees is required for entry.

Nearby Sights to Combine

Its central location makes it easy to combine with other landmarks within short walking distance:

  • Plaka (0.3 km)
  • Hadrian's Library (0.3 km)
  • Tower of the Winds (0.3 km)
  • Fethiye Mosque, Athens (0.3 km)
