Seasonal Weather Patterns

Port of Spain has a tropical climate with two primary seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Temperature remains consistent year-round, typically ranging between 24°C and 31°C.

Dry Season (January to May)

This period offers the most predictable weather with lower humidity and minimal rainfall. Daylight is bright, making it the ideal time for walking tours of the city's cathedrals and museums or visiting the Queen's Park Savannah. Crowds peak significantly in February and March due to national festivities.

Rainy Season (June to December)

Expect frequent, heavy showers and higher humidity. While rain often comes in short, intense bursts, it can disrupt outdoor sightseeing and transport. However, the city's parks and surrounding landscapes are at their lushest during these months.

Choosing Your Travel Window

  • For Culture and Festivities: Visit between January and March. This window coincides with Carnival, the island's largest event. Be aware that accommodation availability drops and prices rise sharply during the lead-up to Carnival Tuesday.
  • For Sightseeing and Nature: April to June is recommended. The weather remains dry, but the peak Carnival crowds have dissipated, allowing for a quieter experience in the city center.
  • Periods to Consider Avoiding: August to October often sees the heaviest rainfall and a higher risk of tropical storms, which can impact travel from Piarco International Airport (POS) to the city.

Preparation and Packing

Regardless of the season, lightweight, breathable cotton clothing is essential for the humidity. If visiting during the dry season, bring high-SPF sunscreen and a hat for city strolls. For the rainy season, a sturdy umbrella or waterproof jacket is mandatory, as sudden downpours are common. When using local transport from the airport or within the city, keep a waterproof bag for electronics.
