City Layout and Districts

Port of Spain is a compact capital concentrated on the northwest coast. To navigate it, think of the city in three primary zones:

• The Downtown Core: The hub of government, commerce, and the waterfront. This is where you will find the cathedral and major museums.
• The Savannah: The green heart of the city. The Queen's Park Savannah is a massive open space that separates the dense downtown from the residential and upscale areas.
• The Northern Range: The foothills rising behind the city, leading toward the rainforests and the hills of St. Ann's.

Arrival and Local Transport

Most visitors arrive via Piarco International Airport (POS). The airport is located outside the city center. The most reliable way to reach the capital is by pre-arranged transport or licensed airport taxis.

Once inside the city, transport is fragmented. While some use ride-sharing apps, the most common local methods are taxis and maxi-taxis (minibuses). Maxi-taxis follow fixed routes and are indicated by signs on the windshield; they are the most efficient way to move between districts, though they can be crowded.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

Visitors often make the mistake of attempting to walk long distances between the downtown core and the northern suburbs. While the city center is walkable, the humidity and layout make this impractical for longer trips; use a taxi for any distance beyond the Savannah.

Another common error is ignoring the local pace of business. Many smaller shops and offices have specific midday breaks or close early on weekends. Plan your museum and gallery visits for weekday mornings.

For a first visit, prioritize the city's cultural anchors before venturing into the wilderness:

• Priority One: Explore the Queen's Park Savannah and the surrounding colonial architecture. Visit the downtown cathedral and the national museums to understand the island's history.
• Priority Two: A trip to the waterfront to see the Gulf of Paria.
• What can wait: Deep rainforest excursions or trips to Tobago. These require separate, dedicated travel days and are best saved for after you have oriented yourself in the capital.
