Understanding the City Layout

Port Vila sits on the southwest coast of Efate along Vila Bay. Orient yourself using three main areas:

  • Downtown Waterfront: The commercial center along the harbor road. Contains the central fresh market, banks, and harbor walkways. Highly walkable during daylight hours.
  • The Lagoons: Behind the central hills, areas like Erakor Lagoon provide sheltered waterways and relaxed residential surroundings.
  • Outer Efate: Natural attractions, coastal bays, and rural villages accessed via the island's paved Ring Road.

Airport Arrival and Local Transit

Bauerfield International Airport lies just north of the urban center. Transfer to town using pre-arranged transport or licensed taxis, identified by a letter T on their license plate.

For daily travel, use the ubiquitous minibus system. These vans have a B on their license plate and operate without fixed stops or timetables. Hail one with a wave, state your destination, and pay the driver in cash when exiting. Taxis are suitable for direct point-to-point trips.

First-Timer Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Expecting bus stops: Minibuses pick up and drop off anywhere safe along the road. Simply flag them down.
  • Tipping and haggling: Tipping is not part of Ni-Vanuatu custom and is discouraged. Prices at markets and stores are fixed.
  • Scheduling errands on Sunday: Port Vila observes Sunday as a quiet day of worship and rest. Most commercial businesses and markets close.

Structuring Your First Visit

Spend your first day on foot exploring the waterfront and central market, then practice hailing minibuses toward the lagoons. Once comfortable with local transit, dedicate subsequent days to exploring the broader Efate Ring Road.
