Sousa River

The Sousa is a tributary of the Douro River located in northern Portugal. It flows through the outskirts of Porto before joining the Douro approximately 16 km from the Atlantic coast. Travelers visit this waterway to experience the quieter, natural landscapes and riverbanks away from the dense urban center of the city.

Getting There

The river is located on the periphery of Porto. From the city center, it is accessible via local transport or by car. Depending on the specific point of access chosen along the river's course, the journey typically takes between 20 to 40 minutes.

Duration of Visit

A visit to the riverbanks generally requires 1 to 3 hours, depending on whether you are stopping for a brief walk or spending more time exploring the surrounding natural environment.

When to Visit

The area is best visited during the spring and autumn when temperatures are moderate. Morning visits are recommended for a quieter experience. Unlike the central tourist districts of Porto, this area does not typically experience heavy crowds.

The river can be combined with visits to several historical sites and landmarks in the region:

  • Palácio do Freixo (7.6 km)
  • Ponte de São João (8.5 km)
  • Ponte de D. Maria Pia (8.7 km)
  • Ponte pênsil D. Maria II (9.5 km)
