About the Square
Jan Palach Square is an open public space located along the Vltava River in Prague's Old Town. It serves as a functional urban plaza bordered by major cultural and academic institutions, including the Rudolfinum concert hall and Charles University's Faculty of Arts. Visitors generally stop here to take in open views of Prague Castle across the water or to sit and rest while navigating the surrounding historic streets.
Getting There
The square is located a 5- to 7-minute walk west from the central Old Town Square. It is also directly accessible via public transportation, with the Staroměstská metro and tram stop located right at the edge of the plaza.

When to Visit
Late afternoon provides clear natural light across the river toward the castle. The area sees regular foot traffic from university students and commuters, but it remains noticeably less congested than the central tourist corridors nearby. Because it sits next to the river, the open space can become windy and cold during winter months.
