Praça Alexandre Albuquerque

Overview

Praça Alexandre Albuquerque is the central public square of Praia's old-town Plateau district. Surrounded by 19th-century government buildings and traditional townhouses, it functions as the civic core of the city. Visitors come to view the historic architecture and walk through the pedestrian paths.

Getting There

The square is located directly in the Plateau, which is Praia's city centre. Walking from anywhere within the Plateau takes less than 5 minutes. If arriving from lower parts of the city or outlying neighbourhoods, a taxi ride to the Plateau takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

Suggested Duration

Plan to spend around 30 to 45 minutes exploring the square, viewing the surrounding building facades, and resting in the shaded areas.

When to Visit

Late afternoons are generally the best time to visit, as midday heat subsides and the area fills with local residents socializing. Midday can be warm with direct sunlight. The area is moderately busy during weekday business hours due to nearby administrative offices.

Nearby Attractions

Because the square is centrally positioned, it can be combined with several sites within walking distance:

  • Roman Catholic Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde (0.1 km)
  • Pro-Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, Praia (0.1 km)
  • Palácio Presidencial (0.1 km)
  • Diogo Gomes Monument (0.2 km)
