Overview

Dar al-Makhzen is the official residence of the King of Morocco, situated inside a walled compound. While the interior is not open to visitors, travellers go to view the monumental gates, perimeter architecture, and the open garden-lined square in front of the palace.

Getting There

From central Rabat, the grounds lie about 2 km south. A petit taxi ride takes 5 to 10 minutes, or you can walk from Rabat Ville station in approximately 20 minutes.

Time to Allow

Set aside 30 to 45 minutes. Because visits are limited to the exterior gates and the outer square, it does not require a long stay.

When to Visit

Morning and late afternoon offer pleasant light and milder temperatures for walking outdoors. The open square rarely gets heavily congested, though brief tour groups pass through during the day.
