What It Is

Ras Khamis is a residential area on the outskirts of East Jerusalem. Cut off by the separation wall and entered only through a checkpoint, it offers a look at local daily life and neighborhood street commerce.

Getting There

From the city centre, take a local bus or shared taxi toward the Shuafat crossing. The journey takes roughly 30 to 50 minutes depending on road traffic and checkpoint queues.

Time to Allow

Allow 1 to 2 hours to walk through the area, with additional time factored in for passing the checkpoint.

When to Visit

Go during daylight hours for visibility and easier transit. Checkpoints get crowded during morning and late afternoon commuter rushes, so mid-day is preferable. Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable walking temperatures.

Nearby Combinations

You can combine a trip here with neighboring spots:

  • Shuafat (1.4km) – An adjacent residential district.
  • Royal Palace, Tell el-Ful (1.7km) – A historic hilltop site.
  • Ramat Eshkol (2.3km) – A nearby neighborhood to the west.
  • Sheikh Jarrah (2.4km) – A district situated closer to central East Jerusalem.
