Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Located on a hill overlooking Salzburg, this site is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Originally commissioned by an archbishop, it functions as a museum and historical site where visitors can explore medieval fortifications and the residence of the prince-archbishops.

Getting There

The fortress is located directly above the city centre. Visitors can reach the summit via a funicular railway or by walking up the Festungsberg hill. The ascent takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes depending on the method of transport chosen.

Time Required

Allow between 2 and 4 hours to explore the castle grounds, the interior museum exhibits, and the surrounding ramparts.

When to Visit

The site is often crowded during the peak summer months and during the Salzburg Festival. Visiting early in the morning helps avoid the largest groups of tourists. The fortress is accessible throughout the year, though weather conditions on the hill can be colder than in the city below.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, the fortress can be combined with several other sites within walking distance:

  • Festungsberg (0.1km): The hill upon which the castle sits.
  • St Peter's Archabbey Salzburg (0.2km): A historic monastery.
  • Salzburg Cathedral (0.3km): The main cathedral of the city.
  • Neue Residenz (0.4km): The former residence of the archbishops.
