Overview
Nockstein is a 1,042-meter rocky peak located on the slopes east of Salzburg in the Koppl area. A popular hiking destination since the late 19th century, it features a rugged, distinctly Alpine character that contrasts with the gentler surrounding terrain. Hikers visit for a short mountain ascent that provides clear views over the Salzburg basin.
Getting There
From central Salzburg, trailheads near Koppl or Guggenthal can be reached in approximately 20 to 30 minutes by regional bus or car. Buses depart regularly from the city, stopping within walking distance of the marked paths.
Time to Allow
Plan for 2 to 3 hours for the round-trip hike, including time spent at the top. Allow half a day if continuing onto connecting trails along neighboring ridges.
When to Visit
The trail is best hiked from late spring to autumn. The route draws steady local traffic on sunny weekends, so weekday mornings are preferable to avoid crowds. Avoid the ascent during or immediately after rain, as the steep, rocky upper sections become slippery.
