Schellenberger Eishöhle

The Schellenberger Eishöhle is an ice cave located on the slopes of the Untersberg in the Berchtesgaden Alps. Situated at an elevation of 1,570 meters, the cave contains ice formations and passages that remain just below freezing. Visitors go here to observe these natural ice structures via guided tours.

Getting There

The cave is located near the border of Austria and Germany. From Salzburg city centre, visitors typically travel by car or public transport toward the Untersberg region. The journey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the mode of transport and traffic conditions.

Time Requirement

Visitors should allow approximately 2 to 3 hours for the experience. This includes the time required for the guided tour through the icy passages and the walk to and from the cave entrance.

When to Visit

Because the cave is located at a high altitude, warm clothing is necessary regardless of the external season. It is advisable to visit during the warmer months when the mountain access paths are clear of snow. Like many natural attractions in the Alps, it can get crowded during peak summer weekends.

Nearby Attractions

The cave can be combined with other local sites based on proximity:

  • Salzburger Hochthron (0.5km)
  • Berchtesgadener Ache (6.1km)
  • Salzburg Zoo (6.6km)
  • Hellbrunner Berg (6.9km)
