Afrasiyab Archaeological Site

Afrasiyab is an ancient settlement located on a hill north of Samarkand. It serves as the archaeological site of the city's oldest inhabited area. Travelers visit this location to explore the ruins of the ancient city and understand the early urban layout of the region. While the site itself consists of excavated foundations and earthworks, the murals discovered here are housed in a separate facility.

The site is located north of the city center. Most visitors reach the area via taxi or ride-sharing apps from the central districts. The journey typically takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the ruins and observe the archaeological remains. If you plan to visit the associated museum to see the murals, you should allocate additional time.

When to Visit

The site is an open-air area with little shade, making early morning or late afternoon the most practical times to visit to avoid midday heat. Spring and autumn are the most temperate seasons. It is generally less crowded than the city's primary religious monuments.
