Transport Modes and When to Use Them
San Francisco is a compact city where several transport modes overlap. Choosing the right one depends on your destination and the terrain.
- Ride-hailing (Uber/Lyft): Best for direct door-to-door travel, reaching hilly neighborhoods like Nob Hill, or traveling with heavy luggage.
- Muni (Buses and Light Rail): The primary system for city-wide travel. Use the Metro for fast cross-town trips and buses for specific neighborhood access.
- Cable Cars: Primarily for sightseeing. They are useful for navigating the steepest hills but are slower than other options.
- BART: The regional rail system. Use this for traveling to the airport or commuting from the East Bay.
- Walking: Effective within flat areas like the Financial District or along the Embarcadero, but challenging in residential hilly zones.
Passes and Ticketing
The MuniMobile app allows for digital ticket purchases and day passes. A Visitor Passport is suitable for those planning multiple trips per day across buses and cable cars. However, these passes do not suit travelers who rely primarily on ride-hailing or those visiting only one specific area.
From SFO Airport to Downtown
Depending on your priority, choose from these options:
- BART: Low cost, moderate effort. It is the fastest way to reach the city center during heavy traffic.
- Ride-hailing/Taxi: High cost, low effort. Best for direct transport to a specific address.
- Shuttles: Moderate cost, moderate effort. Useful for those with significant luggage.
Practical Travel Notes
- Rush Hours: Avoid the Financial District and Bay Bridge corridors during morning and evening commutes to avoid severe congestion.
- Luggage: BART and Muni buses accommodate luggage, but Cable Cars have very limited space and are not recommended for large suitcases.
- Accessibility: Most Muni buses and BART stations are ADA accessible, though some older Cable Car boarding points are not.
- Last Services: BART and Muni operate late, but frequencies drop significantly after midnight.
