Chilean National Museum of Natural History

Overview

Founded in 1830 by naturalist Claudio Gay, this site is one of Chile's three major national museums. Located inside Quinta Normal Park, it holds collections covering Chilean biology, paleontology, and anthropology, giving travellers an overview of the region's natural history and indigenous heritage.

Getting There

From central Santiago, take Metro Line 5 directly to Quinta Normal station, which opens into the park. Transit takes 10 to 15 minutes. A taxi or rideshare from downtown takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.

Time to Allow

Allocate 1.5 to 2 hours to tour the galleries at a comfortable pace.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings offer the quietest visit. The museum gets crowded on weekends and during school vacations with families and student groups. Spring and autumn provide mild weather for walking through the park before or after.
